Professor Carlos Mariano Manuel Joins International Cancer Control Mission in Namibia
Angolan physician, pathologist, researcher and author Professor Carlos Mariano Manuel is participating in the international imPACT Review Mission taking place in Namibia from 8 to 13 June 2026.
The mission brings together international specialists and Namibian health authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the country’s capacity to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, as well as to provide appropriate follow-up and palliative care to patients.
Professor Carlos Mariano Manuel is contributing to the mission through his extensive medical and scientific experience, particularly in the field of pathology, which plays a decisive role in the accurate diagnosis and classification of cancer. His participation represents an important recognition of Angolan expertise within a multidisciplinary international initiative dedicated to strengthening public health systems and improving cancer care.
The imPACT Review — the integrated mission of the Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy — is coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It is designed to evaluate a country’s existing cancer-control services, identify institutional and technical gaps, and propose priority interventions suited to its public-health needs and available resources.
During the mission in Namibia, international experts are expected to hold consultations with government representatives, healthcare professionals, hospital administrators, academic institutions and other stakeholders involved in cancer prevention and care. The programme also includes the assessment of health facilities and services related to cancer registration, screening, pathology, medical imaging, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and palliative care.
The conclusions of the review will contribute to a detailed analysis of Namibia’s strengths, challenges and opportunities in cancer control. Its recommendations may support the development or reinforcement of national strategies, specialised training, investment priorities, access to diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, and cooperation with international partners.
Alongside his distinguished career in medicine and pathology, Professor Carlos Mariano Manuel is the author of Treatise on the History of Angola, an ambitious work that reflects his broad intellectual engagement with the political, social and cultural formation of Angola. His presence in Namibia therefore highlights the remarkable profile of a scholar whose work bridges medical science, historical research and African knowledge production.
The participation of Professor Carlos Mariano Manuel in this international mission also strengthens the visibility of Angolan specialists in major African and global cooperation networks. It demonstrates the valuable contribution that Angolan scientific knowledge and professional experience can make to the development of sustainable responses to the growing burden of cancer across the African continent.
